Simple White Sandwich Bread

Making my own bread from scratch has become second nature to me. I’ve been doing it for as long as I can remember. That fresh bread baking in the oven often feels like a form of time travel, sending me back to my childhood. Running home from school and into the house with the fresh, warm smells of fresh bread cooking. This will forever be one of my favourite smells. Over the years, I never found that my ability to make bread from scratch to be all that interesting. But it seems every time it comes up in conversation, people are impressed. From what I found to be a seemingly boring part of my routine struck interest in others.

Now, while there are many reasons why I think it’s beneficial to make your own bread at home, I think health reasons are my #1. When making breads at home I can control what goes into my bread. I can control what kind of flours, sugars, additives. I can make bread as simple as I want or even venture into making a hearty whole wheat- I have the power when things are made in my kitchen. Not to mention store-bought breads cause me tummy issues.

Another reason you might want to consider baking your own bread at home is to combat some of the damage of inflation. While the price of flour has just about doubled, when you break down the costs of buying the ingredients, baking breads from scratch is much more cost effective than buying pre-made.

Whatever the reason you’re looking into making bread for you and your family, I can guarantee one thing: After you taste bread you make right at home you’ll have a hard time going back to store-bought. There is just nothing like it!

Simple White Sandwich Bread

Ingredients:

3-3/12 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoons honey ( or sugar)

1 teaspoons salt

2 teaspoons instant yeast

1 1/4 cups warm water

Directions:

Instructions:

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, and salt.

In a separate mixing bowl, combine the yeast, sugar, and warm water.

Once the water and yeast becomes frothy, slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes or until it becomes smooth and elastic. Dough should be slightly sticky but not stick to your fingers. If too sticky add small amounts more flour until dough forms into correct consistency.

Place dough in a bowl and cover with tea towel for an hour or until dough has doubled in size.

Take dough out and form into a loaf. Place dough into greased loaf pan and cover, allowing dough to rise again until doubled in size.

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Once the dough has risen, place the loaf pan in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for a few minutes before removing it from the pan and placing it on a wire rack to cool completely.

Enjoy your homemade white sandwich bread!
